I loved the time I spent in Edinburgh! I spent ages finding a hotel that was close enough to the action, be budget-conscious, and would allow for rest between walking tours (and not have too much noise outside). After nearly a week in the city, I found a few pockets that I thought would be really nice to spend more time in. My top choices for best places to stay in Edinburgh for first-time visitors are:
My Choice: Abbeyhill

Abbeyhill is where I stayed—at the Cairn Hotel, a 10-minute walk from the train station. Which is perfect, as far as I’m concerned: Edinburgh Waverley is surrounded by pubs, restaurants, and shopping. It’s a nice way to enter the city!Abbeyhill is a quiet neighbourhood, tucked away from the hustle and bustle. It’s close to nature walks in the park, and cute coffee shops, brunch places, and bookshops.
Where the action is: Edinburgh Old Town (Royal Mile)

The Royal Mile is a little overpriced, but if money’s not an option, it’s where I would stay. The charm of Edinburgh that everyone flocks to is the gothic architecture in the centre of the city. Cobbled stones, old churches, historic pubs, and the indoor market are all spaces where people can take in the sights. It might be a little touristy—there are many Scotch Whisky sellers and tartan/wool shops. But it’s also where the Royal Palace and National Museum of Scotland reside. And it’s where we saw the most people—the further out from the city centre, the less populated we found Edinburgh.
Away from it all: Leith

I chronicled my Water of Leith walk in a previous post, but one of the things that struck me about Leith was how it felt like a fairytale town in the middle of a city. It’s gorgeous, on the water, and full of charm. It’s a 25-minute walk from the train station, but if you’re looking to relax instead of hustle and bustle, this is the place for you.
Where would you recommend staying in Edinburgh. Let me know in the comments—and happy travels!
